Paddocks Press Newsletter. We make complex living simple

Hi Sir/Madam

For Women's Day, we caught up with Jennifer Paddock (a Director at Paddocks) to get to know her a bit better.

Before we get into more personal questions, tell us about your professional background and achievements?
I qualified as a lawyer in South Africa nearly 15 years ago, and also qualified as an Australian lawyer in 2019. It was a big achievement to do my Australian solicitor requalification while working and having two kids under three years old at the time. I even managed to come first in my class of over 300 people which blew my mind!

I lived in Australia on and off for 10 years, in that time I had various roles, from working as a Managing Agent in a rapidly growing Scheme Management Company, to supporting a specialist caravan park law firm - many caravan parks in Australia are converted into "Manufactured Home Estates" which are essentially community schemes (often also retirement schemes). I also worked in a commercial law-firm before returning to SA and rejoining Paddocks as Director and supporting my father in building a legacy business.

Ok, now for the personal stuff...

What are your hobbies?

I love yoga (especially the yin kind) and I'm slowly learning the piano. I enjoy swimming in the ocean and reading fiction is my go-to relaxation activity. And learning! I always seem to be doing a course or some kind of program either to improve myself personally or professionally.

What book are you currently reading?
I am always reading more than one and like to have a fiction and non-fiction book on the go at the same time (as well as podcasts which I love). Right now my fiction read is The Moon Sister by Lucinda Riley. As for non-fiction, I'm reading Jordan Peterson's 12 Rules for Life.

What's your favourite movie?
Across the Universe (a musical with covers of all the Beatles' songs which is just magic!). And nostalgically, I'd have to say Titanic.

What song are you playing on repeat these days?
Ohh, tough one. Probably Goldfish 'Going Home'.

If you were an animal what would you be and why?
Definitely a Lion. It's my spirit animal :)

Best holiday and why?
The Maldives. Put me on a white sand beach with turquoise water, a cocktail and a good book any day!

Please provide an interesting photo of yourself and caption with a little backstory.
In 2019 my husband and I decided to take the kids on a working holiday for nine months and caravan around Australia. We did a 'big lap' around the continent while I continued to work remotely for a Sydney based law firm. This pic was taken during one of my work-day breaks. I'd wake up at the crack of dawn, work from 5-8am, then spend the morning exploring with the family and hop back online from 2-5pm. It was intense but an amazing bucket list experience we'll never forget!

And the last question: please leave us with one of your favourite/memorable quotes?
"If you're not growing you're dying" - I'm not sure who said this originally but a fellow lawyer in Australia used to say it and it really resonates with me.
